This past fiscal year, the Airport allocated over $20,000 in marketing. In prior years, actual marketing allocations ranged from $15,000 to $30,000 in direct marketing, plus additional indirect marketing expenditures such as attending promotional fairs and meeting with prospective tenants. Under FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations, funds the Airport receives from leases, fuel sales, parking, and other concessions cannot be used to market an airline. The Airport has worked cooperatively with the county to obtain marketing funds that will allow us to do that.
Other marketing efforts have included joint agreements with the County for marketing, in which the Airport pays the County for its assistance. The Airport supports the Florida International Air Show with in-kind contributions such as labor, reduced rates on fuel, use of the airfield, and other support. Members of the Airport Authority spend hours regularly, meeting with local, regional, state, and national business entities, chambers of commerce, convention bureaus, and tourism bureaus to promote Charlotte County and Punta Gorda as (1) a business location, and (2) a tourism destination.
These kinds of marketing are distinct and require different messages and means of communication. Marketing to business is rarely something that will be observed publicly, though we invite the people to participate and have included many members of the community in our marketing efforts.
We also make every effort to maximize our investment on marketing. Working with Lorah Steiner of the Charlotte County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Airport Authority has focused much of its marketing efforts in those cities that have airline connections directly to the Punta Gorda Airport. Of course, those of us who live here would never see those efforts since they take place in other parts of the country, promoting Charlotte County and Punta Gorda as a destination.
Working with Enterprise Florida, the Airport Authority meets and promotes the benefits of business in Charlotte County to commercial enterprises located here in Florida as well as other areas of the USA. We work closely with Lucienne Pears and Kay Tracy of the Charlotte County Economic Development to encourage businesses to establish here or to relocate here. The Airport is a key selling point to many of these businesses.
In the eyes of the Airport, a business that chooses to locate in Charlotte County is a benefit to all the county. We are not in competition with the rest of the county to have business locate here, but we are working in cooperation with the county to benefit all of us.
